The great forest stretches hundreds of miles around the Rukongai, a huge ring of trees that form larger and larger the further one moves away from Soul Society. This area is sparsely populated, and its inhabitants are often more than a match for most shinigami. Hollows are a common site, taking cover far from the eyes of any Shinigami and prey upon those that lack the proper caution and preparation.
